About this course

Sailing is navigation made physical: the wind, the water, and the chart all talk at once, and the sailor who listens to all three goes where they want. This course teaches the navigation fundamentals of small-boat sailing: how the points of sail relate to the wind, how to handle the boat through its first maneuvers, how coordinates, variation, and chart distances work on the water, and how a passage is planned with tides and timing. You will learn enough to sail a small boat with confidence and to plan a coastal trip with a chart and a compass.
