The Ocean and Weather
By admin · An advanced course on the engine room of the climate: how the ocean stores and moves the planet's heat, how currents and evaporation drive the weather, how the sea breeds its own storms, and how a warming, acidifying ocean is rewriting the rules of both weather and climate.
About this course
The ocean covers seventy percent of the planet and absorbs the overwhelming majority of the sun's heat, which makes it the true engine of the weather. The sea evaporates the water that falls as rain, warms and steers the air that becomes our storms, and moves heat around the planet through its currents, from the Gulf Stream that warms Europe to the deep circulation that sets the rhythm of the climate. This classroom explains how the ocean stores and transports energy, how currents and upwelling shape coasts and climates, how hurricanes and the great weather systems are born at sea, and how the ocean, now warming, rising and acidifying, is the front line of the planet's changes.
