Weather Forecasting
By admin · An intermediate course on the science of seeing tomorrow: how meteorologists observe the atmosphere, how supercomputers turn physics equations into forecasts, why every forecast carries uncertainty, and how watches, warnings and predictions protect lives and economies.
About this course
Every forecast you read begins with millions of observations, a handful of physics equations, and the fastest supercomputers on Earth. Weather forecasting has improved so dramatically that a three-day forecast today is more accurate than a one-day forecast was a generation ago, and the warning that saves a life is the product of an entire chain: satellites, radar, weather balloons, ocean buoys and computer models. This classroom explains how the atmosphere is observed, how numerical models predict its behavior, why forecasts are expressed as probabilities, and how the skill of forecasters turns raw data into the watches and warnings that steer aviation, shipping, farming and emergency response.
