About this course

Journalism has a history, and that history explains the news you read today. This classroom follows the craft from Gutenberg's printing press and the first newspapers of the 1600s, through the penny press that made news cheap, the muckrakers who proved reporting could change the law, and the golden age of radio and television. It ends with the most urgent questions: what the First Amendment really protects, and how journalism survives under dictatorships and in the digital age. Six lessons, two modules, and a clear view of how the story of the press became the story of freedom itself.
