About this course
Samuel Johnson, a struggling writer in eighteenth-century London, took on a dictionary that two great publishing houses had refused, and finished it alone in nine years. This course tells the story of that project: the man, his famous plan, the quotations that supported his definitions, his brilliant and witty entries, and the dictionary's enormous influence on English culture.
